"content_html": "<p>Some years ago I was in need of a todo list tool. Of course, the requirements\nwere simple: distributed, version controlled, command line support (I must be\nable to access it with minimal requirements). I also <a href=\"https://chem-bla-ics.linkedchemistry.info/2008/10/20/gittodo-support-for-freemind-graphical.html\">hooked it up <i class=\"fa-solid fa-recycle fa-xs\"></i></a>\nwith the <a href=\"http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page\">Freemind</a>\nmindmapping tool. I am in the process of installing it on my new laptop, so\nthought a walk-through might be useful.</p>\n\n<p>First thing to do is to get a copy of the <a href=\"https://github.com/egonw/gtd\">source code</a>\n(sorry, no binaries yet).Because we are compiling from source we have to install\nsome utilities (using Debian/Ubuntu formalism; tune to your platform):</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code><span class=\"nb\">sudo </span>aptitude <span class=\"nb\">install </span>openjdk-6-jdk git ant\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>We also need to install Java libraries used by GitToDo:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code><span class=\"nb\">sudo </span>aptitude <span class=\"nb\">install </span>libcommons-cli-java\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>Then, we are ready to download the source:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code>git clone git://github.com/egonw/gtd.git\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>The source for the command line utilities is found in the com.github.gittodo,\nwhich is in fact an Eclipse project too:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code><span class=\"nb\">cd </span>gtd\n<span class=\"nb\">cd </span>com.github.gittodo\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https://github.com/egonw/gtd/blob/master/com.github.gittodo/README\">README</a>\nfile in this folder explains how to continue, which is first to compile the\ncode with <a href=\"http://ant.sf.net\">Ant</a>. We first need to tell Ant where the dependencies\nare found, for which we use a <em>.properties</em> file:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code><span class=\"nb\">cp </span>ant.properties.template ant.properties\nnano ant.properties\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>The template properties are written for Debian/Ubuntu systems, but you can tune\nit to your likes.</p>\n\n<p>The compiling itself is then as simple as any project using Ant:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code>ant clean make\n<span class=\"nb\">sudo </span>ant <span class=\"nb\">install</span>\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>We now have our command line utilities installed. However, there is one last\nstep left, or otherwise you get an error message like this:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code>gtd-list-items\njava.io.FileNotFoundException: /home/egonw/.gtdrc <span class=\"o\">(</span>No such file or directory<span class=\"o\">)</span>\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>We now need to set up a git repository at a convenient place and let GitToDo\nknow about it. We create the git repository with (I have it in <em>$HOME/var/Projects/hg</em>):</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code><span class=\"nb\">cd</span> <span class=\"nv\">$HOME</span>/var/Projects/hg\n<span class=\"nb\">mkdir </span>gtdrepos\n<span class=\"nb\">cd </span>gtdrepos\ngit init\ngit add <span class=\"nb\">.</span>\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>And we edit the $HOME/.gtdrc file to point it to this new repository, so that:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code><span class=\"nb\">cat</span> ~/.gtdrc\n<span class=\"nv\">Repository</span><span class=\"o\">=</span>/home/egonw/var/gtdrepos\n</code></pre></div></div>\n\n<p>Now we are ready to add a first todo item:</p>\n\n<div class=\"language-shell highlighter-rouge\"><div class=\"highlight\"><pre class=\"highlight\"><code>gtd-create-item Install GitTodo-Freemind and the GitToDo GUI.\ngtd-list-items\n</code></pre></div></div>",
